In recent years, Vilanova i la Geltrú has continued to grow, but it has not lost the quality of life associated with a coastal town. Many development schemes are in progress to provide Vilanova i la Geltrú with all the amenities of a capital. Its future is still in the making, but part of that future has already arrived.

The Garraf Sports Complex
Vilanova is investing in sport
One of the main schemes already under way is to equip the town with new sports facilities. The Garraf Sports Complex will meet the requirements of a town that improves and progresses day by day. This new sports complex occupies the former municipal sports area, now reorganized and extended to for conversion into an open air sport and leisure centre. Amongst the new facilties there will be three football fields, a Sport and Health Centre, and an indoor swimming pool.

Neapolis
Vilanova i la Geltrú is investing in knowledge and technology
Different institutions and organizations in Vilanova i la Geltrú devoted to research and technology make up the so-called Anella del Coneixement [Ring of Knowledge]. This area includes the Technology Centre, the new students' hall of residence, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), the UPC library and classroom building, the CFO La Paperera [a vocational training centre in a converted paper mill], the Punt de Suport [help and information point] of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya [Catalan Open University], and the Victor Balaguer Museum Library. Also within this Ring of Knowledge is Neapolis, a new space for ideas and technology that will provide a gateway to the world of knowledge and information. Neapolis has been designed with the new technologies and the town's economic development firmly in mind.

Maritime Leisure Centre
Vilanova i la Geltrú is investing in the sea
The Vilanova i la Geltrú seafront is changing. The Passeig Marítim [Seafront Promenade] will soon have a new car park; there is a project to construct a new Passeig del Carme, and the old swimming pool will be demolished and the area cleared.
Furthermore, the work on the Camí de San Gervasi will complete the Passeig de Ribes Roges project, the Miramar development, and the San Gervasi beach area.
In addition, the new Municipal Port Council will foment investment in the port area: construction of a new fish market, new offices and a new commercial dock.
Land development for progress
Vilanova i la Geltrú is investing in industry
For a town to have industry, industrialists must be provided with services and facilities that make it competitive with other towns in the area. Many industries are already present in Vilanova i la Geltrú, and to keep them here new land development for industrial use is being actively promoted. The new Pirelli factory, for example, is moving from the town centre to the outskirts, to the old “en Notari II” masia (farm and country house) area, where a new industrial estate is being built. 20 hectares on the new Santa Magdalena industrial estate are also being developed to create better conditions for companies at present located in the town, as well as providing attractive space for new companies wishing to move to Vilanova i la Geltrú. |
